if i were in love with you, perhaps i would capitalise my sentences correctly. if i were in love with you perhaps i would mind my grammar, and check my accents, and remove all metaphorical flourishes - to avoid confusing you. if i were in love with you i would punctuate and steer clear of subordinate clauses. i would write, neatly, love letters in the simple present, with smatterings of future perfect. and future continuous. "i will be writing love letters while you rest," i would write, "while you rest on the sofa." and i would wonder whether it would be ok to add any adverbs or adjectives - would they clutter our love? peacefully and red? and if i were in love with you, and you were in love with me, would words ever come between us?
