landscape

the light switched itself on and off as the wind howled over the slatted roofs. one tiny little spec of dust moved across he foggy surface of the shivering canal. roses reluctantly shared their fading scent with the stench of fish, rotten carcases and forgotten promises. a girl and a boy stood by the dark waters holding hands, hesitantly. i love you he said, and she didn't hear him or didn't want to hear him or didn't know how to hear him. a fox scuttled past and took a moment to look at this sight. a boy and a girl and dark water and roses and forgotten promises and dreams. the spec of dust crossed the city and landed on a computer monitor flickering under the moonlight in a house, by a road, by a river. by the river stood a lonely figure made up of little bits of stardust and confetti and nothing else. she or he or it listens intently seeking out the distant sounds of playlists criss-crossing the wires, from him to her. she listened back at the ranch. smiling. you make her smile.
